A Journey Back In Time For Memorial Day

'During this time when we honor our fallen in the struggle for civilization, take a moment on the 29th of May and look to the East. Not to our own St. Louis or New York but across the Atlantic, over Gibraltar and Homer's deep blue  Mediterranean and arrive at what was once the great city of Constantinople, that on that day in 1453 fell to the Ottoman Turks of Islam. The walls that stood for a thousand years, the city of Justinian and Theodosius, the last stand of a civilization that began almost 2000 years before on the banks of Italy's Tiber was lost. For centuries none in the West thought that civilization would disappear. They were wrong. Consider then our own place in the world, and perhaps, realize that the enemy is always at the gates.'
